Poetry Writing

Expand your creative writing and general writing skills as you discover and develop your poetic voice.

On our Poetry courses, you will respond to new writing themes, and explore the many forms poetry can appear in. You will look at a wide range of work from professional poets and develop your voice through a range of practical exercises that look at tone, rhythm and meter. You will also look at ways to add form to your work, use of metaphor and lyricism, and ways in which descriptive imagery can elevate your writing.

POETRY COURSES CONTENT

• Take inspiration from a range of poets such as the Romantics (Byron, Shelley and Keats), the Modernists (TS Eliot, Sylvia Plath and Dylan Thomas) and Contemporary poets like Hannah Lowe and Fatimah Asghar.
• Understand classic structuring
• Participating in discussion, sharing your work and providing feedback.
• Exercises to help creatively respond to themes, poets and different forms of poetry.
• Inspiring your writing and developing your own.
• Cultivating an understanding of poetic writing and connecting with other texts.
• Drawing inspiration from new and existing sources.

Like all of our writing courses, you’ll receive friendly, constructive feedback from your teacher throughout the course. The opportunity to discuss and share your ideas with a group of fellow writers can be an incredibly useful part of the creative process, helping you develop the style and scope of your writing.
