Human beings are hard-wired to tell and receive stories. Research has shown that we retain information in more detail and for a longer period of time when it is delivered as a narrative.
On our Storytelling for Business course, you will learn fundamental storytelling skills and explore ways to apply these in a professional setting. Using both imaginary and real-world content we will look at how to use story as a powerful tool to lead teams, communicate change, drive growth and capture the imagination of your audience.
Working in a small group and led by an actor and business coach we explore the value of story, how it works in a neurological sense, the key components of a story and practical performance techniques for delivering a story with flare.
By the end of the course you will have a set of tools that will enable you to construct and deliver a story with impact.
One day storytelling for business - course content
You will take part in exercises aimed at enhancing the quality of personal interactions - adding colour and shape to your message.
- Explore powerful story components including intention, suspense, turning points, surprise, sequencing, obstacle and navigation tools to give shape to your message.
- Learn the secret to powerful story types including the Hero's Journey, Rise and Fall and more.
- Manage nerves and connect with others using humour, imagination, imagery and metaphor.
- Use narrative techniques to build a concise, impactful story in a given framework.
- Explore body language techniques to support your story - posture, eye contact, expression, gesture and more.
- Learn vocal techniques including pitch, pace, pause, rhythm and tone to engage your audience.
- Identify opportunities for you to tell stories in your workplace and enliven your verbal communication.
- Flex your content to suit your sector, business context and audience.
- Craft and deliver a work-related story and receive personalised, constructive feedback
