Andrew Weale is an award-winning children’s author, writing tutor and lecturer.
After taking part-time courses in children’s writing, stand-up comedy and comedy writing, Andrew wrote his first children’s book – One Newt in a Suit – and was offered a contract with the prestigious publishing house, Hodder Children’s Books. Since then he has written four more children’s books and has been published by Andersen Press and Random House. In 2013 Andrew won the Red House Children’s Book Award for his pop-up book Spooky Spooky House – the only national award for children’s books that is voted for entirely by children themselves.
He also won the prestigious 2019 Caterpillar Poetry Prize. Judge Brian Moses said: ‘I was hooked from the moment I read “a hyphen had swept between them/like a bird/and joined them with its wings” ... This poem has such potential and children will love the idea behind it.’
Andrew’s classes are fun and interactive, as he is a huge advocate of learning by doing. He loves reading his students’ work and watching them develop, and – having begun his writing career by taking evening classes – believes that anyone is capable of achieving the same success.
“Exceeded my expectations, the workshop was fun, lively, interactive. I learned so much in one day and I believe this is the foundation I needed to start me off as a children’s writer.”
